Students in front of a blood mobile truck

December is typically known as the season of giving. One thing most people don’t think about giving is the precious gift of blood. But at Washington High School, students and staff came together to do just that during a blood drive organized by the Student Council.

On Wednesday, December 4, the bloodmobile from the Community Blood Bank parked outside Washington, ready to welcome donors. Student council member Kinsley Stroh said, “We do this two times a year—once in the winter and once in the spring. It’s cool that it comes right to the school, so it’s a good way to give back to the community right where you are. It’s sometimes hard to find time to donate, so when they come to your school, it’s an easy way to do it.” Seth Gerhardt, another Student Council member, added, "Transfusions in hospitals are critical, and hospitals are always in need of blood donations. There’s been a lot of kids donating blood today, and registration is pretty much full for the day.”

Washington High School is always active in giving back to their community. Student council member JJ Chuol mentioned that they are also in the midst of a winter coat drive, and have done chili cook-offs with the students of Ben Reifel Middle School. As the bloodmobile pulled away with pints of life-saving blood, it left behind a renewed sense of holiday spirit. This event showcased the power of giving back and proved that the best gifts are those given from the heart. The Student Council is already looking forward to the spring blood drive (set to take place April 8, 2025), continuing their tradition of making a difference—one donation at a time.
