Saturday's snow has us thinking ahead to winter weather. Is your family prepared for the possibility of Late Starts or Remote Learning Days? This week, we'll highlight everything you need to know to prepare for changes in the school day caused by weather.

Pairing young learners with older elementary students has been shown to boost social and emotional learning skills for both groups. Last week, Mrs. Powell's and Mrs. Johnson's classes had a great time working together on writing, and doing a directed drawing about kindness.

Today was our first real taste of winter weather. We continue with outside recess every day unless the temperature/wind chill factor is below zero degrees, so it is important that students are prepared by dressing appropriately for the weather, and having winter gear at school. We wanted to send out our outerwear guidelines so that you can prepare as a family for what students should bring to school daily going forward.
If you need assistance in getting winter gear for your children, please contact the JFK Office (SFSDJFKOffice@k12.sd.us).

Safety is our top priority! As the mornings get darker, and with snow on the horizon, we wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the drop off procedures when utilizing the front loop. Thank you for doing your part to ensure the safety of our students!

Learning to read is a critical skill for all children's success. One of our School Improvement Plan goals is to help every student improve their reading skills. During the school day, students practice reading fluently, decoding skills, and working to comprehend texts. One way that parents and guardians can help students improve their child's reading skills at home is by creating an at-home reading routine! Studies have consistently shown that reading at home with children has a positive impact on their literacy achievement. Papa Murphy's wants to support this mission as well by encouraging students to read books. When your child finishes reading a book, please complete the information listed on the flyer your child brings home. After 10 books are finished, you can turn the completed paper to your child’s teacher to receive the Free Mini Murph Pizza Kit Bookmark. This opportunity is optional for families to participate in this school year. Happy Reading!

Roosevelt HS and JFK Elementary are currently without power. No other schools in the area are reporting outages. Students are safe and learning will continue this afternoon with the necessary modifications. Xcel Energy is estimating the power will be restored in about an hour. We will keep you posted.

The Power of Partnership is highlighted, once again, to help SFSD families get connected to affordable internet. The SF Area Community Foundation is investing $50,000 to enroll households in the Affordable Connectivity Program (AFP). SD Voices for Peace leads the effort.
Voices for Peace is working with SFSD schools to inform families of this program. An enrollment specialist will continue to meet families during school events like parent-teacher conferences, success nights, etc. Eligible families should enroll today! GetInternet.gov
