A great student with great goals is how to describe Lucien MartinezSmith, Jr. Our newest “See the Vision” winner from Lincoln High School enrolled in Accounting this fall and his teacher, Mrs. Brunken, soon learned that she had a motivated young man on her hands. His teacher will say the Lucien has a knack for numbers and Lucien will say it is easy to ask questions in class. Lucien wrote, “I like the class approach that you can ask questions and get an answer that is easy to comprehend.” Lucien wants to become a Certified Public Accountant and go into real estate. It is very evident that Lucien is planning his future to Mrs. Brunken. MRs. Brunken says, “I see a bright future for Lucien. He knows how to explain numbers and his participation in the classroom shows me his leadership skills.” Lucien – asking questions, explaining numbers, class participation and making a positive impact on the people you are with demonstrate the merit of our belief in you and of what you can achieve in the future. Congratulations! You are a 22-23 “See the Vision” winner at the CTE Academy!

Alexis Shea is a senior from Washington High School and she has enrolled in Small Animal Science this fall semester and next spring semester she will be enrolled in Large Animal Science. Alexis stated, “It has opened by eyes to animals and a lot more than the basics. It is also extremely fun.” Our See the Vision winner, Washington Warrior and extremely strong animal science student has some goals. “I want to become a veterinarian, own my own clinic with a rescue attached.” CTE Agriculture Teacher, Mr. Jensen, says Alexis has the virtues and the abilities to make it happen. “Alexis is a true leader. She is the first to invite someone to sit with her and the first to make class activities fun.” Mr. Jensen explained that Alexis was a true leader when she set up a class tour to Dog Days Hotel and Day Camp – where she works! Alexis, we see a student that is driven, motivated, makes things happen and is exceptionally nice to other people. We know you love animals and have wonderful people skills which is a great combination for a vet clinic and an animal rescue shelter. We see a young lady that is destined to make a difference in the lives of people and animals. Congratulations on being a winner of CTE’s – See the Vision award!

Our Culinary students along with their teacher Chef Whempner made 200 beef and bean burritos to serve with the program Nightwatch. Nightwatch is a local organization that helps deliver meals directly to food insecure neighborhoods in Sioux Falls. Many of our students took time out of their busy schedules to prepare and serve the meal last night. Great work Culinary students and Chef Whempner!

Chantelle Meyeraan has established a new “first” for the CTE Academy. Chantelle is our first “See the Vision” winner from our brand-new Agriculture Program. Our ground-breaking student is a junior from Roosevelt High School and is enrolled in Small Animal Science. Chantelle plans to take Large Animal Science in the spring semester. Chantelle wrote about her class, “I enjoy the hands-on learning and how relative it to the work force.” Her teacher, Mr. Jensen, said it is Chantelle’s approach to class that is the difference maker, “Chantelle always brings a smile to class, is always ready to lend a hand and is always supportive of her classmates.” Chantelle has made it clear that she loves animals and she hopes to work in animal science and agriculture some day. Chantelle – we think your abilities to initiate conversations, work on projects and communicate with other students is exceptional. Those skills together with a love for animals will make you a ground-breaking difference maker in the industry of animal science.

In the world of career and technical education, we often talk about industry standards. Industry standards is what our students need to understand and be able to do. In this case, it is being able to run a telehandler in Carpentry class. Each student is able to gain telehandler experiences with close supervision and the skill for handling materials.

Excuse us while we brag for a minute… Our Superintendent is pretty talented! Dr. Jane Stavem is an accomplished pianist, vocalist, trumpet player, French horn player, percussionist, xylophone player… oh, and she also plays harmonica! 😉 These talents, along with her deep love for all things Fine Arts, earned her the honor of Parade Marshal for Festival of Bands 2022! We are proud to be lead by someone who values the role extracurriculars play in “preparing each student to succeed in a changing world!”

CTE staff supporting Orange Shirt Day! Friday, September 30th, 2022, is Orange shirt day which began in Canada in 2013. It promotes awareness about the history of American Indian and Native Residential boarding school systems, which still impact Native American and First Nations communities in the United States and Canada. The day honors the children who were removed from their families and forced into boarding schools and remembers those who never returned home.
