Stephen Becker

Stephen Becker is a teacher at Washington who is retiring at the end of
the year. Becker has been teaching for a total of 26 years with 24 of those
years here at WHS. He previously taught at Joe Foss. During his time at
WHS, Becker has taught English I-III, speech, American studies, U.S.
history, world geography, and civics (when WHS still offered civics as a
course). It is safe to say Becker has enjoyed his time at WHS.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to work in two wonderful departments and to
have variety throughout the years. I’ve met some wonderful people over the
years here at WHS. It’s great to meet former students years later and have
them tell me how much they enjoyed [my] class. I have made many friends
over the years working here,” said Becker.
As with any job or career, there are things unique to Washington that
Becker will miss.
“I’m going to miss the pizza feeds! Being part of the Warrior family all
these years has been a privilege. My favorite memory is attending the
variety show and other homecoming activities,” said Becker.
Upon his retirement, Becker has quite the list of things he would like to
do.
“I hope to have more time to visit friends and family out of town. Now
that my mother and stepfather have a cabin in northern Minnesota, I plan to
start fishing again. It has been many years since the last time, and I've lost
much, if not all, of my fishing equipment and will basically have to start
from scratch. I've been reading the novels Old Man and the Sea, Jaws, and
Moby Dick, just so I feel ready to take on that fish!”
While Becker plans to relax, WHS students can expect to see him in the
hallways next year.
“I also plan to work part-time and substitute teach. I'm the kind of person
that has to keep busy. I hope to see many of you again during my substitute
teaching experiences next year."
