Young man in a suit and tie on the front of a magazine cover

If you think you have heard the last of Beneyam Hassan, think again! The Jefferson High School graduate, named the 2024 National Speech and Debate Student of the Year last June, is making headlines once again, this time as the November/December cover feature of “Rostrum,” the official publication of the National Speech and Debate Association.

Known by many as the “ambassador to speech and debate,” Hassan’s story is nothing short of inspiring. In the article, he reflects on his journey from a refugee camp in Ethiopia as a young child, to becoming a trailblazer in his field. Those early experiences, he shares, were the foundation for his passion and drive to create meaningful change.

Now, in his first year at Williams College in Massachusetts, Hassan is already leaving his mark. While working towards a law degree, he co-founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping immigrant families like his navigate complex paperwork and answer minor legal questions. With dreams of practicing immigration and criminal law in the future, he is just getting started!

We could not be prouder to count Beneyam Hassan among our incredible SFSD alumni. Read more about the bright future ahead of him here: https://www.speechanddebate.org/rostrum/
