On Oct. 10th, all 1st, 3rd & 5th grade students had a hearing and vision screening with the help of the Lion's Club and the Sertoma Club. All Hawthorne students had free visual only dental screenings by Falls Community Dental staff. Families also could sign up to have their student receive free fluoride varnish also provided by Falls Community Dental.
Oct 3rd a few DECA students from Lincoln High School stopped by to visit with 3rd-5th grade students. They talked about the importance of attending school every day and making sure students work hard in the classroom. DECA is a club at LHS that is involved with business tasks and problems that a member is assigned. They are constantly involved in activities and are a club that gets together often. Michael Jones is the head of the club, and he continually works hard to help his students get the most possible out of DECA.

On September 25th, fourteen Citi volunteers taught children from grades 2 – 5 about the importance of money and saving. The lesson “Dream Big: Monday and Goals” allowed students to explore the purpose of financial goals, discover the role of decision-making in achieving goals and examine common obstacles to achieving those goals.
Teach Children to Save is a program developed by the American Bankers Association (ABA) that raises awareness about the important role that banks and bankers play in helping young people develop lifelong savings habits. Volunteers can use their unique set of skills and expertise to help teach children financial know-how.
October 10, 2024 is World Mental Health Day. Promoting mental health is key to a more positive classroom environment, both for students and staff. No person is immune to mental health challenges, and schools across SFSD can connect students and staff to any resources they may need to find help and healing in any times of distress. Today and everyday, let's make sure to check in on one another and continue to lift each other up.
