Winter Break Activites

Need some ideas for a few ways to encourage your children to keep learning over the winter break? Here are some ideas to balance holiday fun with learning.

1. Create at-home science experiments

  • create a snowstorm in a jar

  • Step 1

     – First, fill the jar until about ¾ full of baby oil.

  • Step 2 – Mix water and a few tablespoons of white paint in the pot.

  • Step 3 – Return to the jar of baby oil and add the glitter and blue food colouring. You can add as much of these as you like – you are creating a magical winter scene!

  • Step 4 – Add the paint and water mixture into the jar, filling it to the top.

  • Step 5 – Lastly, add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Adding the bicarbonate of soda will start the blizzard!

    2. Set reading goals

  • at the beginning of break set a realistic reading goal based on your child's age and reading level.

    3. Get in the kitchen

  • measuring ingredients, adjusting recipe quantities or watching what occurs when different ingredients are combined, can provide a simple way to incorporate math and science into baking

    4. Make winter-themed arts and crafts

  • create a snowman out of cotton balls

  • use a toilet paper roll and turn it into a penguin

  • cut paper into unique snowflakes

5.Write personalized holiday cards or thank you notes

  • practice spelling and vocabulary while teaching your child about the importance of expressing thanks for the gifts they received over the holidays
