All City kindergarteners had a great time at the Outdoor Campus on their recent field trip. They learned about the different types of seeds and how they travel. Students enjoyed their time in nature!

Every Friday, the third grade and kindergarten students 'buddy up' with a friend and read together for about 20 minutes. Some students go to Mrs. Pike's kindergarten room and the rest go to Miss Leloux's third grade room. This is a great time for all students to practice their reading and listening skills. For many students, this is a highlight of their week and a great way to spark a new friendship! Siblings always get to be buddies which is also such a special treat for them! We love our buddy time!

On April 25th, ACE 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades participated in the live virtual Magic of Recycling Show with Bill Kerwood. Bill's engaging presentation educated students on what to recycle, why to recycle, and how to recycle properly all while throwing in a little magic trick here or there! Thank you to The City of Sioux Falls Environmental Services Division, Troy Lambert, and Holly Meier for organizing this event for the students.

This year through the Discover Dairy program, the 3rd and 5th grade ACE classrooms 'adopted' a cow! Each month the classrooms were sent information about their baby calves and learned different facts about dairy farms, cows, etc. The 5th graders baby calf was named 'Kady' and the 3rd graders adopted 'Abby' from the same farm in Nebraska.
On April 25th, the students got to do a live Zoom call to the farm to see an update on their baby calves. The local farmer was available for questions and shared facts about our cows and their farm. It was fun to see how much they have grown!

ACE third graders visited the Old Courthouse Museum to learn about the "Almost Forgotten Crafts of the Early Dakotas" on April 29. Students got a chance for an up close and personal lesson on making pottery, learning how the first printing presses worked, and how to spin yarn from animal fur to make clothing. Each presenter explained about their 'lost art' and how they are are still keeping it alive today! It was very interesting! After the presentations, students got a chance to tour the Old Courthouse Museum.

ACE second graders had a special guest from Armenia come to visit their classroom! Varduhi is currently a foreign exchange student at Washington High School. She told the children all about Armenia, wrote their names in Armenian, and even sang a beautiful song in her language! Thanks for stopping by Varduhi!

KIDS CARE
On April 29, the All City 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participated in their monthly Kids Care community service activities. Kids Care is a monthly tradition of community service projects and volunteering to help out to local businesses/organizations in any way they need. Kids rotate each month to a different project throughout the year. This month students volunteered at DakotAbilities, LifeScape School, Ronald McDonald House, Downtown Library, St. Francis House, and had one in school activity to make May Day baskets. While at these organizations, students may clean/organize toys, play games and sing songs with the residents, organize/clean books & shelves, prepare bags of toiletries, make May Day baskets for others, etc. After each month project, students reflect in a journal about what they did and learned from helping others! The students feel so good about giving their time to help others!
Thank you to Kristen Benidt, our Kids Care coordinator, for getting everything organized with the businesses/organizations. Also, a big thank you for the parents for driving and chaperoning at the different places. Kids Care would not be possible without your help!

Happy Administrative Professional’s Day to our one and only Kim Van’t Hul! The Jane Addams staff/school celebrated her in many ways by dressing up like her, donuts, compliment cards, and Starbursts! Kim always goes above and beyond for our students, staff, and parent volunteers! Thanks, Kim, for all you do! We appreciate you!

We are so appreciative of our After School Professionals, Stacy and Drea! Thank you for helping with and planning our Kids Inc. After School Program!! Thanks for all you do!

Staff Changes for 2022-23 School Year
Spring is a time for change! In the education world, it is a time where new assignments are made and staff are planning for the next school year. We have a few changes coming our way at Jane Addams.
Resource: Ms. Hausmann is moving to Milbank where she has accepted a position as an elementary Special Education teacher.
Art: Mrs. Cabrera will be moving to Sheldon, IA with her family to be closer to her husband's family. She has accepted a position teaching middle school Art and Computer Science.
PE: Mr. Quamen has accepted a position at Harvey Dunn school where he will teach full-time rather than traveling between two schools.
Office: Ms. Kim will be working just three days a week next year (Wed-Fri). Kathy Horstman is joining us to serve as Lead Clerical on Mon-Tues.
First Grade: Mrs. Williams has accepted a position as an Administrator Intern at Lowell Elementary. Her position has been posted and we will interview to find the best candidate.
Principal: Jane Hannemann will be retiring after this year and Jennifer Van Duyn will be stepping into her new role as All City and Elementary Immersion Principal next year.
Please take the time to wish these staff members well as they continue their education journey!

Forwarded message from the Sioux Falls Public School Education Foundation!
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 2-6, and the Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation want to celebrate educators who have made a difference in your life or your child’s! We are encouraging individuals to donate $25 to the Education Foundation in honor of a teacher who has gone above and beyond. We will recognize all those who are nominated on social media during Teacher Appreciation Week! Donations will be used to support our grant programs for teachers. Here is the direct link to donate: https://sfpsef.kindful.com/?campaign=357333 Thanks for considering nominating a teacher!

Congratulations to Heidi Williams in her new role next year as the Elementary Administrator Interim for Lowell Elementary. For the past 11 years, Mrs. Williams has taught first and second grade at All City. She has been an influential teacher to many and will be missed dearly by ACE families and staff. Best of luck in your new adventure!

The Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation awarded the 28th, 29th, and 30th Public School Proud Grants at Jane Addams Elementary yesterday afternoon! Sheila Pike, Heidi Williams, Tanya Rausis, Eliza Leloux, Alexa Nelson, and Lindsey Gray received $1,443.47 for their grant, “S.O.A.R. Into Family Time.” They will purchase STEM materials, board games, snap circuits, and puzzles, and students will work collaboratively with their peers, teachers, and parent volunteers. Thank you, Cutler Law Firm, LLP, for sponsoring this grant!
Eliza Leloux received $3,690.63 for her proposal, “Full STEAM Ahead!” She will purchase STEAM kits, marble runs, Dash robots, and Osmo coding games. In the application, she wrote, “This project will spark an interest and lifelong love of the arts and science in children from an early age. It is my goal for students to be excited about science, technology, engineering, arts, and math! STEAM-based learning gives students tools and methods to explore new and creative ways of problem-solving, displaying data, and being innovative. It teaches them how to think outside the box!” Xcel Energy: South Dakota has been a longtime supporter of STEM education in the classroom, and we appreciate the investment they have made to fund this grant!
Lindsey Gray received $1,070.58 for her application, “STEM-ulate Our Brains.” She wrote, “The science kits detailed in this project involve hypothesizing solutions to problems, playing with the results to figure out what works and what needs improvement, reformulating the solutions to incorporate new ideas, and sharing invention amongst peers. With the STEM kits I purchase, students will complete a human circuit, experiment with beads that defy gravity, and discover where static electricity really comes from! I don’t want my students to 'pretend to be scientists', I want to equip them with the skillset necessary to become scientists.” Thank you, Xcel Energy: South Dakota, for providing students with hands-on, engaging opportunities! #PublicSchoolProud

A big THANK YOU to Life Church for their generosity and kindness throughout the whole year to our Jane Addams staff! They have "adopted" our school the past few years and bless us at Christmastime and with monthly gestures of kindness. They even allowed us to use their facilities for meetings when we were under construction in our building previously. Charity Helleson and Jennie Warden bring delicious treats to our staff meetings each month and go above and beyond with cute themes and decorations! Thanks ladies! Thank you, Life Church, over and over again for making us feel special! We appreciate all of your kindness!

Our Compliment Card Board is full so it's time to celebrate!! Jane Addams students work hard each day to earn a compliment card following our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) behavior system. PBIS focuses on the "Three B's" of "Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe." When students are demonstrating one or more of these characteristics, they can earn a compliment card from a staff member. When we fill the board as a school, there is a celebration! Each week we also draw from the compliment card earners for winners from each class to receive a small prize. Way to go kids! Keep up the great work!
