Requirements
Education Level | Bachelor’s degree in an approved teacher education program. South Dakota Teacher certificate with endorsements in Elementary Deaf or Hearing Impaired and Secondary Deaf or Hearing Impaired. |

Physical Requirements | This position requires constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination, hearing; intermittent speaking and standing, walking and writing. |
Other Requirements | Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated skill in understanding typical and atypical hearing development and the medical, clinical, functional, and psychological impact of deafness and hearing loss. Language acquisition and development strategies for deaf learners. Proficiency in American Sign Language. |

Essential Function & Duties
Provides direct instruction to students with deafness/hard of hearing in accordance with District approved programs of study.
Abides by School Board policies and rules, teacher handbooks and the negotiated collective bargaining agreement.
Participates in identification, assessment and IEP development and delivery for eligible students eligible under hearing loss or deafness categories of eligibility.
Knowledge and experience implementing best practices in specialized instruction.
Knowledge and experience in evaluation procedures, formal and informal assessment, administration of standardized assessments, and interpreting assessment results to include Audiogram for reporting and eligibility for special education for students with hearing loss or deafness.
Maintains student records regarding the referral evaluation and placement process in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.
Participates in parent conferences and communicates with parents on a routine basis keeping them well-informed about their child’s progress on IEP goals and services.
Plans and implements small group and individual specialized instruction to support the individual goals outlined on the IEP.
Utilizes teaching techniques consistent with the research on characteristics of effective teaching.
Establishes student success as a primary teaching goal and provides opportunity for all students to experience success.
Promotes developmental growth and achievement for students.
Provides support to staff in the areas of hearing loss.
Facilitates accommodations for students in structured and unstructured settings.
Establishes a learning climate that promotes the orderly behavior of all students while maintaining the dignity and positive self-concept of each student.
Participates in school and District study committees and department meetings.
Maintain the confidentiality of students and their families.
Provides training to other teachers on hearing loss, teaching strategies,
adapting materials, and using hearing equipment (Hearing Aids, FM Systems).
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Some District classrooms and work areas are not climate controlled and are subject to extremes of temperature and humidity.
Hazard
For some buildings, stairs, chalk dust and exposure to communicable diseases may be a potential hazard. In science labs, there could be exposure to chemicals and fumes. Equipment that supports classroom instruction could be potentially hazardous under certain conditions.
