Custodian - Mentoring Training Positions (High Schools/PM, Facility & Grounds, Mechanical)

Reports to Custodial Supervisors, Plant Maintenance Supervisor, Director of Operational Services

Receives Guidance From High School Custodial Manager, Plant Maintenance-Mechanical Manager, Plant Maintenance Assistant Mechanical Manager, Plant Maintenance-Facility and Grounds Manager when working under their supervision.

Education Level

High School Diploma

Experience Desired

Minimum of 8 months training at the high school or 4 months high school training with minimum 1 year prior custodial experience.

Physical Requirements

Good physical health including ability to lift 75 pounds, climb to high and difficult places and work at those places. Constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination, standing and walking. Repetitive motion with wrists, hands and fingers. Frequent bending, carrying, hearing, lifting and stooping. Occasional climbing and crawling.

Other Requirements

Desire to advance in the Operational Services Department to a Grounds, Building Engineer or Plant Maintenance Technician position. Demonstrates an aptitude for mechanical and carpentry/grounds work. Ability to work unsupervised. Good attendance. Ability to communicate and follow written and oral communication. Demonstrated positive attitude towards people with whom one works, ability to work cooperatively and willingness to accept instructions and training.

Essential Functions & Duties

  1. To develop skills in a wide range of areas as follows:
    Performs corrective (repair) and preventive maintenance on items, such as; mechanical systems and equipment; heating and cooling systems and equipment; temperature control systems; fire alarms and automatic sprinkler systems; electrical systems and equipment; plumbing and sewer systems and equipment; program clocks and signal systems, including building communication systems; lawnmowers, snow blowers and other grounds care equipment; general repair of building furnishings.

  2. Provides miscellaneous maintenance services at assigned facility; such as replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes where needed; remove graffiti from surfaces; deliver and/or move supplies, materials, furniture and equipment.

  3. Performs site maintenance and repair work at all District facilities, such as snow removal, including operating truck-mounted snowplows and sanding equipment; and lawn irrigation system maintenance.

  4. Assists in marking athletic fields and sites for athletic events.

  5. Performs building repair and preventive maintenance at all District facilities in areas, such as roof replacement and repair; glass replacement; masonry repair; interior and exterior finishes; and doors, windows and hardware; and playground equipment.

  6. Performs remodel and/or repair work at District facilities, such as new or replacement walls, floors and ceilings; installing sheetrock and paneling; plastering and painting; construct and/or install corkboards and bulletin boards; construct and/or install furniture, such as shelves, cabinets, counters and equipment; install playground equipment and fences.

  7. Works a revised schedule when necessary.

  8. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Working Conditions

Occasionally subjected to mechanical and electrical hazards, extreme temperatures and humidity. Atmospheric conditions occasionally include fumes and dust. Caution necessary to avoid harm from misuse of chemicals.

Training

These positions are temporary training positions. Individuals will train for a minimum of 6 months rotating between a high school, mechanical and carpentry shops learning preventative maintenance tasks and related mechanical, carpentry and grounds skills performed by Operational Services. Once training is complete, the employee will return to their current position.

Advancement

Employees in these training positions may apply for advancement into posted positions as per custodial contract. Ifselected for the new position the employee will moved to the new pay grade per contract. The employee may then remain in the training program until completed or begin the new position. The employee's original position will then, be filled per custodial contract. Ifthe employee elects to complete the training, the employee will return to their new position at the end of the training.
