Language Skills

One to two years related experience preferred. Previous teaching, counseling, or school experience desired. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to learn new software packages.

  • Facing challenges or barriers in life and school situations

The goals are to empower students to:

  • Envision their future and take steps to make it a reality

  • Set high standards for personal and academic achievement

Other Requirements

Must be self-motivated and have the ability to multi-task and work unsupervised. Must have strong communication skills and exhibit “people-friendly” qualities that include having an outgoing, friendly, and empathetic character.

Essential Function & Duties

  1. Work directly with departments at Washington High School including but not limited to counseling, teachers, administrators, etc. to provide educational and career assistance and guidance to students.

  2. Work in collaboration with District Wide Partners such as Career Technical Education (CTE) building, Southeast Technical College (STC) and other Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) specialists

  3. Assist STC faculty who teach “Communication in the Workplace” and “College Math 100”.

  4. Support JAG curriculum and participate in State and National conferences and events.

    • JAG programing seeks to connect with students who have barriers to success and empowers them with skills and support in education and employment.

  5. Provide career assessment activities that directly relate participant interest to local workplace needs and assist students to take ownership of their future.

  6. Plan, develop and implement exploration opportunities, including college campus visits, industry visits, job shadows and networking opportunities.

  7. Create opportunities and participate in local and regional field trips.

  8. Attend statewide and national JAG trainings and student development conferences.

  9. Create an in-school/community advisory committee to support and advise this position and students.

  10. Build relationships and work directly with post-secondary advisors to connect participants to dual credit opportunities, career exploration and other offerings.

  11. Creates student led, project-based learning opportunities for students to take the roles in leadership.

  12. Connect industry representatives to participants through job shadowing/mentoring opportunities for further career exploration and to build interest in local workforce opportunities.

  13. Utilize curriculum to develop participant soft skills and communicate workforce expectations.

  14. Serve as the Advisor for the WHS Chapter of the National Career Association

  15. Prepare students for competitions and student leadership conferences through JAG.

  16. Improve students' skills and confidence by creating personal brands that include resume writing, interviewing skills, and communication skills.

  17. Provide Trauma informed Care and a safe space for students to grow and learn.

  18. Expand upon current available pathways to provide more opportunities for participants.

  19. Interface with local businesses, associations, and local and state agencies to promote the program and build connections to industry.

  20. Assist students in applying for jobs, colleges, scholarships, and financial aid. 

  21. Maintain accurate and complete records of participant interactions, events, and all other work assignments.

    • Prepare reports on students and activities as required.

    • Oversee and send out any necessary participant correspondence.

    • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.

    • Become a contact for parent and participant inquiries.

  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
